[WHITE TEXT [UNDER DR. GHALY] Dr. Ghaly, January 19, 2021]

DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello my name is Romduol and I will interpret Dr. Mark Ghaly’s press conference from January 19 with two main topics on COVID-19 updates and vaccinations to protect our bodies from getting the virus.

[WHITE TEXT: COVID-19 Updates, Vaccinations]

DR. GHALY: We have seen for the past several months news about COVID-19.  Now there is a new COVID variant  called L452R. This is a new virus which has come from COVID-19.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: clip art of solid green color COVID cell with green text below Covid-19 with a green fades to red arrow to a new solid red color COVID cell with red text below L452R]

DR. GHALY: This new virus has been found here in California and which has spread quickly in Santa Clara County.

[WHITE TEXT: SANTA CLARA COUNTY]

The new virus is called L452R and we see that this is spreading much faster than COVID-19.  This gives us even more reason to stay home, wil keep transmission of both COVID and L452R down as much as possible. The cells in the body don’t know L452R but does know COVID-19 so that is why we are seeing that the new virus is spreading very fast.  It easily sticks to our bodies because it is new and something that we don’t know much about. If we stay home and don’t socialize then we have a good chance of not getting COVID or L452R.  We don’t want to see this spread out more in California. Please stay home!

[WHITE TEXT: Vaccinations]

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: clip art of a needle pointing downward, the top is yellow and the liquid inside the syringe is blue. the clipart is inside a white square]

DR. GHALY: California has already received a large pile of vaccines.  Those vaccines are from Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca (Oxford).  We have already given out many vaccines to doctors, nurses, and healthy care workers.  We also have been giving out vaccines at pharmacies and other places just like there are different places that give our flu shots.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: white box with red letters in the middle: moderna with a large red X covering the word “moderna”]

DR. GHALY: However, a warning for all of you about the Moderna vaccine.  We have given out over 300,000 Moderna vaccines. But we need to stop it now. Why? Ten people had very bad allergic reactions to the Moderna vaccine which could be like a rash, difficulty breathing, red face/chest, coughing, and more symptoms.  I know 10 people is not a big number but still California wants to be safe so we stopped all Moderna vaccines.  We have decided to stop all Moderna vaccines in California. We will continue to give out Pfizer and AstraZeneca (Oxford) vaccines to keep California safe.  We want to give our vaccines to everyone, as fast as possible but still stay safe.  So again, Moderna will not be used anymore until no more allergic reactions, then we might give out Moderna again in the future.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: clip art of a two-story building with a blue sign above sliding glass doors with white text: NURSING HOME with two senior citizens standing on the front lawn next to a tall green tree]

DR. GHALY: Nursing homes are where senior citizens go to live with support such as learning budget, help with cooking, giving medicine, and more.  Nursing homes have had a high transmission rate but has gone down in the last few weeks.  We have added 10 more nursing home support places so that the transmission will slow down and to support staff.  Because of the 10 new homes that are spread out which means we have a smaller number of senior citizens in each home,  we see that the number of COVID in seniors living in nursing homes is slowly going down, that is good news.

[WHITE TEXT: LOS ANGELES, RIVERSIDE, SAN BERNARDINO, SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY HOSPITALS ARE FULL!]

DR. GHALY: Want to share important news about Southern California specially Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Joaquin Valley, all of their hospitals are full and the workers are stress and overwhelmed. We are looking for more people to come and give support so that our hospitals are not overwhelmed with too much work during emergencies, for surgeries, and COVID-19 care.  If there are not enough health care workers or if they are too tired to work then we will be in a very bad situation which I don’t want.  We have looked at the whole state of California and see that the numbers are going down at all hospitals in the state! That is great news!  It shows people are staying home and not getting and spreading COVID-19.   Staying home does help, please continue to stay home until the virus is gone.  Stay safe. Stay home.  Go out only if you have to. Wash your hands.  We have added extra places for patients with COVID-19. Keep in mind that when you are almost recovered and feeling better, the hospital may send you home with your own breathing machine to make room for someone else. The hospital will give you what you need to go home and get better safely on your own.  For those who need to be watched closely by a doctor/nurse, they will stay in the hospital until strong enough to go home on their own.

Second image is a round face with a green mask covering nose and mouth with green text: Wear a mask. Third image is a yellow ruler with yellow text: Stay 6 feet apart.  Fourth image is red soap bar with blue bubbles with red text: Wash your hands]

DR. GHALY: I know you are tired of me telling you the numbers and COVID again and again, remind you to wear your mask, stay 6 feet apart, wash your hands and do not socialize – stay home please! COVID is still spreading fast and with the new L452R spreading too this has become even more serious and I must ask you to stay home please.  Thank you!
