DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello, my name is Romduol Ngov and I will interpret for Dr. Mark Ghaly, Press Conference, today September 1.

WHITE TEXT ON DARK GRAY BACKGROUND: COVID-19 Update

  1. GHALY: After looking at all the numbers we are seeing that COVID-19 is in fact slowing down with fewer new cases.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: White square with the Coronavirus cell with gray based and red stems all around at the top, black line with arrow diagonal from top left to bottom right leading to a yellow happy face with black eyes and smile, below the line/arrow are shapes of people in dark brown font with left column with four people, then 3 people, then two people, then one person.

  1. GHALY: In the past, we had many doctors and health care workers coming out in large numbers to help care for our COVID-19 patients.  Health care systems were overwhelmed. But now because COVID-19 numbers have gone down, the demand on health care workers has also gone down.  Good job everyone!  Keep wearing your mask, wash your hands, and keep your distance.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: White rectangle with clip art image at top hands with soap with orange text: Wash.  Second image down is a face with brown hair and blue mask with blue text: Mask.  Third image down is the outline of blue spray bottle with orange text: Clean.  Fourth image at bottom is the image of a woman standing with long dark hair and blue clothes and a light blue arrow in front of her with blue text: 6 Feet

  1. GHALY: Remember, we don’t have a vaccine for the coronavirus yet.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: White rectangle with the coronavirus cell gray base and red stems all around with a syringe inserted into the cell next to a clear empty vial.  Behind is an international no symbol of a red circle and slash.

  1. GHALY:  Now looking at the watchlist of counties in California such as Sacramento, Los Angeles, Riverside, Fresno, when you look at the list you notice that some counties are opening businesses and some are not which can be very confusing.  So now we have set up a new color coding system with four colors.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Four rows of color bars. Top row is purple with images skull/bones  (three) and stop sign with hand in middle (two). Second row is red with exclamation point (!) inside a triangle (two) and stop sign with hand in middle (one).  Third row is orange with thumbs up sign (two) and exclamation point (!) inside a triangle (one). Fourth row is yellow with happy face sign (two) and thumbs up (one)

  1. GHALY: The purple color means that specific county has a high level of COVID cases.  Red means the county has several cases. Orange means the county has some.  Yellow means that the county has few cases.  If you want to know what color code is given to your county then look at www.covid19.ca.gov. At the top you will see three bars and a yellow tab that says Menu.  You will also find  a link to “local alerts” then you will see a map with colors for each county and the color codes (yellow, orange, red, purple).  You will also see a place where you can find the status, you can type the county where you live and it will show you what color as well as what types of businesses are open or closes such as stores, grocery stores, restaurants, mechanics, doctor offices, dentists,  etc.  If you want to know where you can go get yoru hair cut, you can type that in the Activity Search field then the computer will tell you if that place is open or closed for business.

WHITE TEXT ON DARK GRAY BACKGROUND: COVID-19 Update. To check your local status, go to www.covid19.ca.gov.  [second text] In top right corner, click.  Image of yellow box with black text Menu with three bars above the word Menu.  [third text] In third column, find “Local Info and Alerts” .  [fourth text/image] Shortcut to map: covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy with image of California with all 58 counties outlined in white.  Counties are shown in yellow, orange, red, and purple with a list of each color and what they mean to the right of California.  [fifth image] Gray box with dark blue text: Find the status of activities in your county with two search fields for County with “enter county” and for Activity with “enter a business or activity” [sixth image] Activity with “enter a business or activity” with a neon green circle around it.

WHITE TEXT WITH DARK GRAY BACKGROUND: School Update

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Four bars: top row is purple with one skull/bones and one stop sign with hand in middle. Second row is red with one exclamation point (!) inside a triangle. Third row is orange with one thumbs up sign.  Four row is yellow with one happy face sign.

  1. GHALY:  Now to explain how the color codes work with schools being open or closed.  If a county has a purple or red color then that county’s schools are all ordered to stay closed and online only.  If the county is orange or yellow because COVID-19 cases have gone down for three weeks or more then schools can open.  Counties still have to ask teachers/schools if they want to open.  IF they don’t want to go back to campus then school will stay online.  Keep in mind the county must to stay in orange or yellow for 3 weeks before they can think about schools opening again for on-campus teaching.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Four bars: top row is purple with one skull/bones and one stop sign with hand in middle. Second row is red with one exclamation point (!) inside a triangle.  Neon green rectangle around purple and green with white text: Closed & Online Only.  Third row is orange with one thumbs up sign.  Four row is yellow with one happy face sign. Neon green rectangle around orange and yellow with white text: May Open In-Person.  [next image] inside of classroom with teacher standing by large white board and several children sitting on the floor looking up at the teacher.

  1. GHALY: We will update the color codes based on the information that we have  every week on Tuesday. Tuesdays would be the best time to check the website to see what color code is each county and see if possible schools will open again.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Four bars: top row is purple with one skull/bones and one stop sign with hand in middle. Second row is red with one exclamation point (!) inside a triangle. Third row is orange with one thumbs up sign.  Four row is yellow with one happy face sign.  Next to these four rows is white text: Local status Updated on Tuesdays.

  1. GHALY: This weekend is Labor Day weekend, we have seen already with several holiday weekends we have had since March that there is a high number of people going out in public, in crowds, going over to other people’s homes, this is where we see outbreaks happen again and again.  Please do not have large family gatherings. Stay home.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Dark green rectangle with white clip art of a person then another clip art with groups of people and a red international no symbol with red circle and slash around the groups of people.

  1. GHALY: You can keep it small, a few people. But even with a few people still wear a mask, stay apart, clean all your tables before and after.  Same if you go out to restaurants, food stores, and other places, the workers are working hard to keep those spaces clean and safe. Please respect by wearing your masks, washing your hands, and keeping your distance.
