[FULL SCREEN WHITE TEXT ON BLACK BACKGROUND: Latent Interpreting Media, Governor Newsom Press Conferences, April 14 and April 15, 2021. Transcript is available in the Video Description section of the post]
[VIDEO DESCRIPTION: Deaf Interpreter Romduol Ngov is a Khmer genderfluid person with short black hair and tan skin. Romduol is wearing a grey short sleeved shirt, sitting in front of a medium blue background looking at the camera.]
DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello, I’m Romduol and I am interpreting for Governor Newsom’s presentations where he went over this and that. Who is the governor? Here’s an image of him.
[WHITE TEXT AT BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER: Romduol]
[FULL SCREEN IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Governor Gavin Newsom is a white man with slicked back grey hair. He is wearing a black suit with a light blue shirt and a dark blue tie. He is speaking and gesturing with his hand. He is standing in front of three flags and from left to right, they are the American flag, California state flag and California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) flag.]
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The CAD logo is circular. The circle is outlined in dark blue and the words “CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF” and “1906” curves just inside the dark blue outline. The dark blue letters, “CAD”, are squeezed in a solid light blue circle inside the words and year.]
DEAF INTERPRETER: The governor discussed two topics – school openings and vaccination efforts.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A clipart image of a grey and white school building with a red roof, clock, and American flag waving against the blue clouds. The building has several large windows and several large columns. Children exit a yellow school bus and walk across the green lawn into the school building.]
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Schools all over the state of California are now opening. We understand that teachers, staff such as janitors, teacher aides, and so on, and students are anxious, nervous, and unsure about whether it is safe to go back to schools. Those fears are very understandable. COVID is not over yet. But after looking at the data, COVID rates are at its lowest.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This image has four sections. The top section shows soapy hands with the word “Wash” in orange. Under that, a brown haired person wearing a blue mask with the word “Cover” in blue. Under that, an unlabeled blue spray bottle with the word “Clean” in orange. At the bottom, a woman standing with an arrow next to the words “6 Feet” in blue.]
So it is safe for schools to go ahead and open as long as the safety guidelines are being followed. One of the main reasons we want schools to open is to support our students’ mental and emotional health. They have been at their homes for over a year and dealing with a wide variety of emotions. At schools they will be able to interact with their peers.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A multi-generational group of latin people smile for the camera. The children in the center piggyback on the young adults as the older adults smile and embrace them.]
We also want to further support the Latinx community who has been hard-hit by COVID. This is why it is important that we continue to follow the safety guidelines especially with schools opening.
DEAF INTERPRETER: The second topic was about vaccinations. As you may recall, there are three vaccines – Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The Johnson and Johnson logo are the words “Johnson + Johnson” in casual cursive and dark red.]
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Johnson & Johnson vaccine is on hold because of recent deaths of 6 individuals which we are looking into. We want to tell you about a new update – people 16 years old or older are now eligible to receive vaccines.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The logo for MyTurn.ca.gov shows the state of California made up of rows of straight horizontal lines in varying colors of orange, yellow, light blue and dark blue. Underneath are the words “MyTurn.ca.gov” in orange, blue and gray.]
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: So if you are 16 years old or older, please go ahead and make an appointment for your vaccine. As you may recall we talked about schools opening due to low COVID rates.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The United States in varying shades of pale yellow, orange, dark orange and red. California is a pale yellow color. There are large COVID-19 cells dotted all over the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, but the COVID-19 cell on California is very small.]
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: The data shows that California has the lowest COVID rates out of all states in the United States so we are doing good but we still must observe safety guidelines.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: If we stop using masks, COVID rates could go up and we don’t want that to happen so please keep wearing the mask. Thank you.
