TRANSCRIPT:

DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello my name is Alexis [name sign A to 5 wiggle outward from heart] interpreting for Governor Newsom’s press conference today.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: animals roaming Picture of an elephant with ivory tusks running toward the camera with a group of gazelles running toward the trees in the opposite direction. The earth is covered with grass.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Hello, I remember my grandfather took very good care of our earth. He had a deep love and respect for plants, trees, animals, and the earth. He passed down those values to me.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS: [several images in a row] earth with tree clip art of the earth with a green tree growing out of the top of the earth. Heart earth. Clip art with a blue square and the earth with arms around a red heart.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: As governor, I want to do everything I can to honor my grandfather’s legacy and save our earth and the earth’s resources including plants, animals, water, energy and more.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of a mountainside covered with tall trees and orange fiery flames against a dark night sky.]

We are seeing so many things happen to our earth.  During the wildfires, animals are losing their habitat or homes.  When there is a fire, when trees fall, animals have to leave and when they return there is nothing left.  People have time to pack their things, leave in their cars, and in the same way, they often return to find their homes gone because of the fire.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Side by side image of a healthy pink lung and an unhealthy black/gray lung.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: The smoke is so bad that it is too dangerous to be outside, when breathing in the bad air, our lungs can become very tired, weak, and sick. Without rain in California for so many years, we see our lands become very dry. We haven’t taken care of this dry land.  But because of that, we have many fires happening here.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Clip art of a water faucet with one drop of blue water and a hand turning the water off. Above the image is blue text: SAVE WATER]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: With the heat and not enough rain, our waters, lakes, rivers, are drying up.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Clip art of a light bulb with an abstract green tree inside the bulb Under the lightbulb is white text: Save Electricity.]

I have called in a team of people who know a lot about plants, animals, water, energy, to work with me, work together to do what we can to save our earth so that we can all live on a planet with clean homes, clean air, and a clean earth. We come up with ideas that lead to bills that you can vote on.  I hope that you will vote YES on these bills that try to fight against global warming and climate change.  Think about the fruits and vegetables that we eat everyday.  Have you thought about where those come from? During COVID-19, shelter in place, you all stayed home, many of you were able to continue to work from home.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of two farm workers bent over and standing knee deep in green vegetables. They are both wearing masks, striped shirts, and a hat or hoodie on their head.  Metal poles and white canvas are in the background under the daylight sky.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: But one group of people didn’t have this option, that is our farmworkers who are busy every day going out in the farms to gather fruit and vegetables.  What if they didn’t go out and pick fruits and vegetables during this time? We would not have food out on tables.  Even during a worldwide pandemic, even during fires and smoky air, our farm workers have worked hard to make sure that we have fresh food on our tables.  Plus California sends our produce to places all over the world! When you go to the grocery store and see fruit and vegetables and put them in your cart, bag them up and bring them home, remember to thank our farm workers for their hard work.  I am so thankful for their care of our earth.

[WHITE TEXT: COVID-19 Update]

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Clip art of Coronavirus cell with a gray base and several red stems spiking out all around the cell.]

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A masked man with black hair and tie has his eyes closed and his arm outstretched in a way that looks 3D. The actions of this man are clearly gesturing “no” or “stay away”. To the right of this man is a large crowd of people on top of a red circle with a line going through it. This signifies something “not allowed”, in this case, a crowd. The front of a car with “6 feet” are between the man and the crowd. Below them is a faucet with flowing water and two hands washing with bottles of soap and bubbles. A masked woman with brown hair is smiling and giving a thumbs up.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: I am repeating myself here but once again want to remind you to be serious about wearing masks, washing your hands, staying 6 feet apart and not going out in big groups.  I know that you want to go to school, not learn by yourself alone at home. Some of you want to go to work and be with your co-workers.  We can do that if we get our numbers down.  If we all do our part we can open schools, businesses, hair salons, clothing stores, and more.  Please be careful, follow the rules, and we will stop this virus from spreading.  Thank you.
