DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello, my name is Raven Taylor. I am here to interpret for Governor Newsom’s press conference.  He covered three topics.

[WHITE TEXT: Governor Newsom, December 15, 2020]

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Signs on buildings, red letters: moderna and blue sign with white oval with blue text: Pfizer. [WHITE TEXT UNDER IMAGES: Vaccinations]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: First topic is vaccination.  Good news, vaccines has arrived! Those are from Pfizer.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Three images. On the left is a UPS truck leaving the warehouse. On the top right shows a man wearing a reflective jacket operating a forklift. On the bottom right shows two men in Pfizer protective gear (hard hat and mask) loading white boxes into an ice box.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: More will come in next few weeks but for now, 24 cities in CA already have vaccines. California is very diverse and we will make sure that everyone will get a vaccine.  When vaccines are given out we will make sure we don’t forget anyone.

WHITE TEXT: Vaccinations by Groups

FULL SCREEN WHITE TEXT: Group 1 : hospitals, primary care pharmacies, nursing homes, paramedic/EMT/ fire/police, people on dialysis, prisons/jails

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION:  A clipart image of a large white hospital building with many windows. On the top is the word “HOSPITAL” with a red cross next to it.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: If you are wondering who will get vaccines, I will explain. The first group of people who will be vaccinated are the front line people who work with COVID-19 patients and who have a higher risk of getting the virus. The first group will be people who work at hospitals, hospital pharmacies, and work and live in nursing homes.  Paramedics/ambulance workers, firefighters, police officers, dialysis patients, and people who are in prison or jail are in the first group.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A clipart image of male and female firefighters, doctors, and police officers. ]

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A male prisoner, whose face is blocked by shadow and prison bars, is wearing a standard orange prison jumpsuit. He is holding onto the prison bars and looking down.]

FULL SCREEN WHITE TEXT: Group 2: HomeHealth Care (IHSS), primary care clinics, urgent care

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A clipart image of an elderly man wearing dark glasses and holding a cane. A younger female with a visor is touching the older man’s hand with both of her hands.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Now as for the second group of people who will get vaccinated – this group will include people who work inside the homes of elderly and blind patients for their health.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Black Text reads “Urgent Care” with a red line between the two words and a red cross.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Doctors and staff  who work for Urgent Care are part of group 2  Urgent Care is for when you need to see a doctor but you do not have an appointment.  You can just walk in and wait to see a doctor.  Those people will be vaccinated next.

[WHITE TEXT: COVID-19 Update]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: COVID-19 numbers are still going up.  What we can do about it? We can take the COVID-19 test with a swab in your nose/mouth to see if we have COVID-19 or not.  As you can see by this image, the numbers are rising.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION:  A redheaded woman getting a COVID-19 nasal exam]

[FULL SCREEN WHITE TEXT:

As of 12/15/2020

Bay Area ICU Available:  15.8%

Greater Sacramento Area ICU Available: 14.9%

Northern California ICU Available: 29.8%

San Joaquin Valley ICU Available: 1.6%

Southern California ICU Available: 1.7%]

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Four empty hospital beds, side by side in a row.]

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: The ICU is for sick people who need to be under watch by doctors all the time. If you look at this map and see that you are in blue areas where the ICU is at 15% or less which means there are not enough beds in the ICU.  This means that you have to stay at home.  This is a very serious situation.
