VIDEO DESCRIPTION: Deaf Interpreter, Alexis Bravo, a tan-skinned male with dark brown wavy hair, standing in front of a tan wall with an army green button-down collared shirt.
TRANSCRIPT:
IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS: [top corner] Governor Newsom standing in front of American and California State flags, looking to his left away camera. Map of California in red and Capitol Building in a white overlapping map of California. WHITE TEXT: GOVERNOR NEWSOM PRESS CONFERENCE, AUGUST 17, 2020. [bottom corner] WHITE TEXT: This video made possible with the support of NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing with dark blue logo spells NORCAL with Empower (purple). Educate (teal). Elevate (green) above the logo.
DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello my name is Alexis Bravo and I will be interpreting today’s government press release for Aug 17. There are three things that I will discuss today.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Image of the middle of a thermometer with red mercury in center rising and a bright orange/yellow sun with clouds behind the thermometer.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: First, the heatwave that swept not only California but the entire west coast, broke a 70-year record!
IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS: [first image] Picture of white lightning across a blue sky hitting the ground in a deserted area. [second image] Picture of three strikes of white lightning hitting the ground with trees causing fire and smoke to rise from the ground.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: But what’s more were the lightning storms that started some of the 15 fires in California that were made worse by the wind.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of two firefighters in full gear holding a large hose gushing out water full blast toward a blazing orange fire under the night sky.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Firefighters responded and were able to control most of them but four of the 15 have not been contained. The four fires that could not be contained are listed here:
WHITE TEXT: RIVER FIRE (MONTEREY COUNTY), RANCH FIRE (LOS ANGELES COUNTY), LAKE FIRE (LOS ANGELES COUNTY), APPLE FIRE (RIVERSIDE COUNTY).
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: However, our biggest concerns are the fires in Lake, River, and other counties. Some of you may experience a power outage.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Drawing of gray hills under a blue sky with white dots as stars and a white crescent moon. Three electric towers with wires stand at the top of the hill and spread downhill. To one side of the electric tower are five homes with lights off (black windows). On the opposite side of the electric tower are five homes with lights on (yellow windows).
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: If this happens, please do not get upset at the lack of advance warning. Consider other ways to access power, like solar power or a generator. Big businesses that consume electricity must limit their energy consumption during the hours of 3-9 pm. Boats that dock at our ports can no longer plug into public energy sources at the dock, but must use their own personal sources. We recognize that Californians rely heavily on electricity but we implore you to understand that these power outages are a necessary precaution to prevent unmaintained electrical lines that break and spark dangerous wildfires.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of an electric tower and a tree at the front with large orange fire blazing behind.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: I know that many of us are having a hard time during this heatwave, but overusing your A/C can have negative impacts. It is best to cool your homes using your A/C during the night and early morning and then keeping your A/C at a temperature of 78 degrees from 3-10 pm. Whenever possible, turn off your lights and A/C. For those of you who want to be informed of possible power outages, sign up to receive alerts from your local power agency so that you can prepare yourself for the possibility of losing power. If you leave a room, make sure to turn the light off and teach children to do the same after they leave a room they were just sleeping or playing in. Try not to use household appliances like microwaves, multiple lamps, stereos, or any unnecessary power consumption sources. This energy-saving move will help the California government make decisions that will keep this state safe.
IMAGE DESCRIPTION: COVID-19 image of a gray cell with red fuzzy stems sticking out all around the cell.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Good news! Santa Cruz County was just recently was taken off the watch list for Covid-19 hotspots. Unfortunately, these counties have been added to the watch list.
WHITE TEXT: Amador, Mendocino, Inyo, Calaveras, Sierra Counties
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Despite that, the steadily increasing number of people being admitted into hospitals and ICU in California has finally started to decrease over the past two weeks! However, the number of counties on the watchlist went up from 38 to 42. Here is the list of counties on the watchlist now:
WHITE TEXT ON BLACK BACKGROUND [FULL SCREEN]: ALAMEDA, AMADOR, BUTTE, CALAVERAS, COLUSA, CONTRA COSTA, FRESNO, GLENN, IMPERIAL, INYO, KERN, KINGS, LOS ANGELES, MADERA, MARIN, MENDOCINO, MERCED, MONO, MONTEREY, NAPA, ORANGE, PLACER, RIVERSIDE, SACRAMENTO, SAN BENITO, SAN BERNARDINO, SAN DIEGO, SAN MATEO, SAN FRANCISCO, SANTA BARBARA, SAN JOAQUIN, SANTA CLARA, SAN LUIS OBISPO, SIERRA, SOLANO, SONOMA, STANISLAUS, TULARE, VENTURA, YOLO, YUBA, SUTTER COUNTIES
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: PFL, Paid Family Leave, is when your work continues to compensate you while you take time off to care for your family. The Government predicts that this law will go into effect.
IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS: Three images in a row: [first image] Clip art of a blue head with a white mask and blue text: WEAR A MASK. [Second image] rectangle image with hands washing on left, the middle is a stopwatch, and right is the text: 20 seconds. [Third image] Two people standing apart with a white two-way arrow showing the distance between.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Most importantly wear a mask, use soap when washing your hands, and practice social distancing. Covid-19 is negatively affecting us all, especially our doctors and nurses, and many of whom experience fear of infecting their families because they know that an average of 132 people dies of Covid-19 every day!
WHITE TEXT: 132 deaths every day
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: We have not had a single day of no Covid-19 deaths. This knowledge breaks my heart. Many people are suffering and dying so please take this seriously because it is very serious. Thank you.
FULL-SCREEN IMAGE: WHITE TEXT: This video made possible with the support of NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing with dark blue logo spells NORCAL with Empower (purple). Educate (teal). Elevate (green) above the logo.
