WHITE TEXT ON BLACK BACKGROUND:  “Coronavirus”

GOVERNOR NEWSOM:Starting on Monday we will have four color-coded levels for the state of California that have been impacted by coronavirus. The colors are purple, red, orange and yellow.

Purple: 8 or more people have coronavirus.

Red: Up to 7 people have coronavirus.

Orange: A low number of people have coronavirus.

Yellow: Zero to one case of coronavirus.

Most of the counties in California are currently “purple” because they have 8 or more people with the coronavirus. Thanks to the increase of test sites, we have been able to decrease the wait time between test and results from 21 days down to 7 days. However, the internal process still takes 21 days. Community leaders deliberate, look at the numbers, and decide which of the four colors to assign to each of California’s 58 counties.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM:We have a new website called covid19.ca.gov and on that website you can see where various counties stand by seeing their color. If you want to know how your county is doing, look at the website.

WHITE TEXT ON BLACK BACKGROUND:  “Press Conference Q&A August 28”

DEAF INTERPRETER:Now the Governor will start the question and answer portion of the press conference.

Question: My question is about evictions. Legislators are looking at a bill that will protect people who are renting houses and apartments.

Governor: The bill is still under review and legislators are in discussion about how to best protect Californians from eviction.

Question: What sort of organizations help people with evictions?

Governor: Yes, there is a group that protects people’s rights to stay in their homes and not be evicted.

Question: I’ve been looking at the number of people going into ICU and the hospital and it is confusing because the numbers are different.

Governor: I understand your confusion. While it is true that between the months of June and July, the number of people who require ICU stays are increasing and the number of people in regular hospital rooms are decreasing. But I would say that overall the numbers are fairly good. Another piece of good news – in the beginning, Covid-19 test took up to 21 days before results were sent, then it was an average of 14 days, but now we are averaging 7 days from test to result! The entire process is complicated and requires several steps, but I am happy to report that people get their positive or negative results within 7 days.

Question: More and more private schools are reopening and some are suing the state to remain open. What are your thoughts on that?

Governor: Unfortunately, I am not able to discuss current and ongoing lawsuits.

Question: Is California still offering waivers for schools and allowing them to reopen?

Governor: More information on this topic will be offered on Monday.

Question: The tobacco bill recently passed. What are your thoughts on that?

Governor: Yes, it did pass.

Question: The protests in Sacramento started peacefully but as time went on, people started damaging property, breaking windows, etc.

Governor: I fully support peaceful protests, but I draw the line at vandalism. We should show respect for the environment and uplift the community. Please, stay home, social distance of 6 feet, wear your mask and wash your hands! Stay safe!
