TRANSCRIPT:

DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello my name is Romduol and I will interpret today’s Governor Newsom’s Press Conference, July 22.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION:  A picture of Governor Newsom standing in front of the California flag with an image of the shape of the state of California and at the bottom of the photo is white text Governor Newsom, July 22, 2020.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: As of yesterday (July 21) we have 12,900 new COVID-19 positive cases.

WHITE TEXT: 12,900 COVID positive

WHITE TEXT: July 21 = 115 deaths

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: We also saw 115 deaths.  A few days ago, we reported 95 deaths and now we have 115.  You might think to yourself that the number is very small, but no, that is too many.  This is serious.  Think of the families, friends, and love ones of those who have passed away and think of how they are grieving.   This shows how serious COVID-19 is. You could get sick with the virus and you could die from it. This is real.  To prevent this from happening to you do the following three things: wear a mask, keep your distance from others, and wash your hands.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Three images after the other: clip art of blue head with white face mask, the image on a black rectangle on right is two hands with soap, the middle is a stopwatch, and right is the text: 20 seconds; an image of two people standing apart looking in opposite directions with a white two-way arrow between showing distance apart.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: California is a huge state with a large population.  So image doctors and nurses having to take care of everyone in California, that is not possible.  Hospitals have beds available to treat COVID-19 patients.  But suppose all the hospitals are full and you need a bed, we have outdoor stadiums and tents with extra beds if needed.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of the inside of stadium with rows and rows of beds.  Picture Inside of large white tent with blue beds and IV poles next to each bed.  Both spaces are empty.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Those places are ready. I want to thank volunteers who are doing a lot of medical work.  Those volunteers have medical experience such as working with patients with gathering information such as name, birthdate, symptoms, etc.  Other volunteers are helping with giving out tests including nasal swabs, drawing blood, and more.  These volunteers have been a great help to address the needs that we have right now. I am very grateful. We have good news, we are now partnering with BYD who is making masks in large production.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: open cardboard box with a stack of blue surgical masks inside with white elastic bands

GOVERNOR NEWSOM:  They will continue this important work of mass production so that we keep up with the demand and we will pay them for their work.  As the masks are made will be distributed to front line workers who work directly with COVID-19 patients.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of doctors, nurses, staff standing next to each other with masks on, looking at the camera.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: After them, we will share masks with essential workers such as grocery store employees and others so that they are safe at work.  Then the rest of the masks will be distributed to anyone else who needs it. We have plenty.  We are working hard to make sure we have what we need for California.  I am entering into partnerships with different companies to make these masks available.  I am encouraging other states to do the same thing.  We are not perfect here but we need to work together to slow the spread.  If you want to go out to the beach, back to school, then we all have to do our part to reduce COVID-19.  With our extra masks, we can share with other states that don’t have enough.  We use data to adjust our guidelines. Some counties have reduced the spread greatly and can open up businesses, other counties are still struggling.  We have this list of counties on the watch list at www.covid19.ca.gov.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: I want to caution you that we will not open up again quickly, we will open slowly.  We hope that we find a vaccine soon!

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of a female patient with black hair and black-white striped shirt with the sleeve rolled up ready to receive a vaccine from a person with blue gloves and a needle ready to be poked into the patient’s upper arm.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM:

Until that happens, please follow all the guidelines including wearing a mask, washing your hands, and keeping your distance.  That is important!
