Transcript:

Deaf Interpreter: Hello my name is Christine and I will be providing a summary of Governor Newsom’s press conference from July 9, 2020. This event was held at a military airport in Northern California. Today the Governor focused on two points; fires and COVID-19.

WHITE TEXT: Governor Newsom, Press Conference, July 9, 2020

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of Governor Gavin Newsom wearing a black jacket, standing behind a podium in front of a CAL FIRE white, red, and a black helicopter.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Clip art of yellow sun next to a clip art of a thermometer with red rising inside

Governor Newsom: California becomes hotter and dryer with less rain means that our fire season has officially begun. We want to be sure we are ready by using helicopters that are powerful and fast to respond by bringing thousands of gallons of water to put out our wildfires as quickly as possible.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Helicopter flying over an active fire going through a mountainside with a large long spray of water flowing down from the helicopter to the fire

Governor Newsom: California cherishes our firefighters, EMTs, and law enforcement officers.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Picture of six people standing side by side, smiling and looking at the camera.  All wearing uniforms to show their work as janitors, cafeteria workers, doctors, hospital staff, nurses, and postal workers representing essential workers.

Governor Newsom: We don’t want them to get sick and miss work. If they miss work then they are not out there to serve the public. Please wear your masks to protect our essential workers.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Blazing fire going up a mountain with palm trees in the front.

Governor Newsom: California relies heavily on our firefighters, California Highway Patrol, and hospital workers during the fire season.  If you don’t wear your masks and don’t keep your distance then there is a  higher chance that our first responders will get sick. We don’t want that.  Please wear your masks, keep your distance, to keep everyone healthy and safe.  California has had several fires in the past but most of them are small and easy to contain as they are about the size of 4 to 5 football fields.   My advice to you is to please have an emergency response plan if you experience a fire.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Red paper with white letters: EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN with a white square showing the routes in a building for evacuation exits with arrows and circles showing where to go in case of evacuation.

Governor Newsom: If you are ordered to evacuate, that means you need to immediately leave your home or work.  This is important to protect yourself and your family.

If you have to evacuate, discuss with your family where your safe meeting place will be. If roads are blocked, have a plan of alternate routes of how to leave your area if needed.   Please be prepared for an emergency.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION:  PG&E LOGO on a blue rectangle with white text: Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

Governor Newsom: Remember the PG&E situation that happened not long ago and how many people were upset, PG&E did declare bankruptcy.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION:  Green bag with a white dollar sign on it and a red arrow pointing downward.

Governor Newsom: Since that time PG&E has made major improvements.  They have many new rules that we all need to follow.  If you have dry trees, bushes, and grass, those need to be removed.  If you have old equipment, be sure to update or replace it.  Expect scheduled occasional power outage throughout the state.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Black oval with black text inside: OFF with red power circle button.

Governor Newsom: There are several rules we need to follow.  These changes are expensive but PG&E is fully responsible to pay for those upgrades and changes, the money does not come from California residents.  Now about COVID-19, I don’t understand those of you who don’t wear your masks, your attitude of not caring about others bothers me a great deal.  We are seeing the number of new COVID-19 cases going up daily, the number of people hospitalized keeps increasing, the number of people going into the ICU keeps going up too.  More and more people are taking the COVID-19 tests with swabs up their noses to see if they have the virus or not.  We are seeing the numbers of new cases go up daily and weekly.  I have asked you, again and again, to please wear a mask, please keep your distance, and please wash your hands.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Blue rectangle with white clipart of a mask, arrow pointing both ways, and hands washing with lather bubbles above.  White text with light blue background under mask: wear a cloth mask; under arrow: practice social distancing; under hands: wash hands often.

Governor Newsom: Be smart.  Be careful.  Be responsible for your community, friends, family, co-workers.  We don’t want to see these numbers going up anymore. We want to see our numbers go down. That means each of us needs to stay safe and healthy.  Thank you!
