Webpage top has an image of a man with a beard kissing a baby’s cheek he is holding next to a blue banner that with white text: Tenant and Landlord Resources next to a picture of the top part of an apartment building. Below the blue banner is a text box with black text; RENT HELP GUIDE. At the bottom of the screenshot are four links: orange for Tenants, purple for Landlords, pink for Homeowners, blue for Partners.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: The first of four topics today is a focus on Housing. Despite having some of the strongest renter protections in the nation, COVID-19 has had a profound impact elevating the stress of renters and homeowners struggling clearly with this pandemic. 5.4 million renters are at risk now of losing their homes because renters can’t make the monthly payments. That has a ripple effect on the small property owners being foreclosed on because they can’t make mortgage payments. The impact is disproportionate on our BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities, especially the African American and Latino community. We set up a new law that landlords can not evict because of nonpayment related to COVID-19 through February 1, 2021. Renters now need to make partial rent payments (pay as much as you can) over the next number of months, a minimum of 25% of their total rent. For example: if your rent is $1,000.00 a month, pay at least $250.00 per month to stay in your home/apartment. That’s a minimum, rental payments to help support this collective effort. Again, we’re not only supporting renters, we also need to be sensitive to the needs of small property owners, people with just a few units, people that literally maybe inherited property or saved money, have a mortgage that they took out.
