[WHITE TEXT: Gavin Newsom & Dr. Mark Ghaly, January 11 & 12, 2021]

DEAF INTERPRETER: My name is Ashley (A taps on Heart) and I will interpret two press conferences from Governor Newom and Dr. Mark Ghaly which had two topics.

WHITE TEXT: COVID-19 Update, Vaccines (this topic starts at time stamp 5:10)

NEWSOM/GHALY: A COVID-19 update and about the numbers at this time  and vaccines and our plans with that.

[WHITE IMAGE: Coronavirus gray cell with red stems spiking out all around]

[Below image][WHITE TEXT: COVID-19 Update]

NEWSOM/GHALY: We continue to look at three different types of numbers.  How many people have COVID, how many people go to the hospital because of COVID, and how many are going to the ICU because of COVID.  The numbers are all going up a little bit for all three areas. But not going up to fast or too high, just going up a little bit.

[FULL SCREEN WITH WHITE TEXT ON A BLACK BACKGROUND:

ICU Capacity

Shelter-in Place Ordered for:

Southern California 0%

San Joaquin Valley 0%

Bay Area 9%

Greater Sacramento Area 9.7%

No Shelter-in-Place Order for;

Northern California 35%]

NEWSOM/GHALY: This shows that the shelter in place is helping to keep the numbers down.  See the white text for information on what percent of beds available in ICU in California.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Chart showing the top bar is purple is widespread with more than 7 daily cases per 100 and more than 8% positive tests. The second bar is red which is substantial with 4-7 daily cases per 100 and 5 to 8% positive tests. The third bar is orange which is moderate with 1-3.9 daily cases per 100 and 2 to 4.9% positive tests.  Bottom bar is yellow which is minimal with less than 1 daily new cases per 100 and less than 2% positive tests.]

NEWSOM/GHALY: Remember the four tiers: purple, red, orange, and yellow?  Trinity County moved down from purple to red.  Humboldt County moved up from red to purple.  Now we have:

WHITE TEXT: Trinity County now Red. Humboldt County now Purple.

NEWSOM/GHALY: In the past people were going out, going on vacation, going different places and the numbers were going up. But now people are staying home, sheltering in place, that is good. That brings the numbers down. Less people with new COVID-19 cases going to the hospital means stay-at-home order is helping.

WHITE TEXT: Purple 54, Red 3, Orange 1, Yellow 0

NEWSOM/GHALY: We have added surge hospitals making it less stressful on our main hospitals with the number of patients with the virus. We are saving the beds in hospital for the more serious cases and those who have other needs are being sent to other places. For example,  LA hospitals are very full. Ambulances are told to go to another location where there are more beds.  Hospitals have to make decisions about who stays and who moves.  For example, those who are very sick will stay and those who are less sick will be moved to another hospital.   We are getting extra help from other states and other areas to come here such as doctors, nurses, and more in our health care facilities.

\WHITE TEXT: VACCINES

About vaccines, we have already given out 800,000 and we will get 200,000 more by this Saturday/Sunday.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A syringe needle pulling liquid out of a vial,] [WHITE TEXT:1ST VACCINE [THEN A FEW WEEKS LATER] ADD WHITE TEXT: 2ND VACCINE]

NEWSOM/GHALY: Remember everyone gets 2 shots, first vaccine then again two weeks later second vaccine. Remember, we have three groups that will get the vaccines in order by first, second and third groups.Focus on Health care workers and people who live in homes for senior citizens, group homes, and for veterans.  That is the first group, then we will move on to the next group. I know everyone wants their vaccines now, please be patient, we have to give out vaccines in order, first, second, third to make sure those who have the highest chance of exposure and contact with COVID get the vaccines first.  We will get 2.5 Million more vaccines in CA next week.

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The background is a doctor in full gown. The left hand has written on it with  a black marker “NO”.The right hand holds the vaccine.]

NEWSOM/GHALY: You can say no, I don’t want the vaccine. So far, with health care workers some have already said no I don’t want the vaccine.  That is fine.  We are trying to get more places open to give out vaccines. Will open up the following places: Disneyland, so if I can’t get an appointment anywhere near me, I can go to Disneyland, or Petco Park Stadium in San Diego, the Dodger Stadium in LA, or CalExpo. You can go to any of those places soon to get the vaccine

NEWSOM/GHALY: We want everyone to know more about what COVID and the vaccine is about. We will have commercials on TV (breaks between TV programs) and information provided to everyone in 40 different languages.  Because we want everyone in California to get the vaccine to protect our bodies from getting the virus..

[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This image has four sections. The top section shows soapy hands with the word “Wash” in orange. Under that, a brown haired person wearing a blue mask with the word “Cover” in blue. Under that, an unlabeled blue spray bottle with the word “Clean” in orange. NEWSOM/GHALY: Please stay home, when you go out, wear a mask, do not socialize with people outside of your home, only go out if you need to for work or for important errands, stay home and be safe.

NEWSOM/GHALY: We have some news from the San Diego zoo that two gorillas have COVID-19 and possibly a third one. This means that humans can pass the virus to animals.

Thank you.
