Deaf Youth Leadership Camp (DYLC) 2024 Update

A Message from Monique Ball, DCS Executive Director

Hello everyone! To our families, community members, teachers, and students… I would like to take this opportunity to make an announcement: Thank you for continuously showing us your support and anticipation for the annual Deaf Youth Literacy Camp (DYLC). I’d like to take this opportunity to inform you all that this year, the 2024 DYLC will be on hold. I’d like to really explain why:

Assessment from last year:

  • Looking back, was DYLC successful last year? Yes.
  • Can we improve DYLC? Yes.
    Result from Assessment:
✅ Need for restructuring ✅ Consideration for:
    • How we can better accommodate Deaf, Deafblind, Deaf-disabled, and all the various capabilities

We want to make sure that we will provide the appropriate accommodations and activities to positively align with everyone’s capabilities.

As determined as we were, available commitment and time to plan was also added to another reason why we must pause DYLC this year.

Our goal is to expand on activities with better accommodations for each individual so that all our students can join us for Summer 2025!

Additionally, we want to ensure we will hire the right staff, gather inputs, come together as a team to brainstorm ideas.

We will analyze, discuss and plan in details about how we can present activities.

We will begin planning all this in the fall. That is our vision. Our goal.

On a final note, Deaf Community Services (DCS) has continuously focused on providing high quality services to you, members of the community.

A primary focus of ours this year is to improve our satisfactory rating from you, our community members.

We have received some concerns that were submitted to us, and we are actively putting in the work to remediate these feedback with strategies for improvements.

We want to remind you that our major goal here is to include youths.

So we will maintain this determination as we plan for 2025.

We encourage you to preserve your anticipation for the 2025 DYLC.

Let’s look forward to next year’s DYLC with excitement!

We hope you will be there to join us, where we will see you at DYLC 2025! 🤟🏾
